TOPIC: Modifying the exhaust??

Modifying the exhaust?? 1 year, 9 months ago #1

Hi,

i would like to ask the experts on the forum what is the best way to go about changing the exhaust to get a nice deep sound.
I have a 2005 red VMAX.

Appreciate the info, also if i can get an idea about how much it should cost, so that i do not get ripped off.

You can drill 5/16" holes in the rear covers of your muffler, between the existing 5 rivets. Drilling these 5 holes on each side will definitely give your Vmax a better sound, and is the cheapest route to go. You can also buy aftermarket slipon mufflers that sound & look good, but be prepared to spend about $400+.

I am no expert but there are several options for a Gen-1 and the cost can range from affordable to pretty expensive! First if your only looking for sound and not to interested in getting more performance and not too expensive the Cobra 4-4 is a nice set-up, cost around $500-600. Also there is the Supertrap slip-om mufflers and come in either black or chrome and they are a little cheaper at around $400-500. But if you want performance and sound and price is not really an option, a Kerker 4-1 with a stage 7 get kit and separate K&N filters is what will probably make the most power. On my Gen 1 I used a UFO 4-2 system with carbon fiber mufflers, a stage 1 jet kit and stock style replacement filter from K&N, I found it was a very user friendly exhaust. It did not cost a lot and was not obnoxiously loud. I paid about $700.00 for the system, $100.00 for the jet kit and $60.00 for the replacement K&N air filter. There are many others like Marks perfomance and Hindle(if you can find one) multiple different companies from Europe and more! There really is too many to list, but I am sure there are a lot more people on this forum that have a lot experience that will offer just as much if not more info for you!

Hi,
I finally got around to drilling the holes a recommended, but i only used 4/16" to try it and see, i still have to option to expand the holes to 5/16". One question came to mind.
Do i need to adjust or calibrate the carbs after doing this.I noticed the bike was idling funny but once it warmed up the idle was stable.

Appreciate the feedback,

Regards,

You shouldn't have to, there should still be plenty of back pressure from the exhaust to allow you to run stock.
I would step up the hole size, you don't want it to sound like a motor boat running in water, stepping up the hole would get rid of that sound, if you have it!
