TOPIC: Restarting issue
Restarting issue 2 years 2 months ago #1

Anybody have any trouble starting their Max when the engine is hot? I noticed this a few times on mine. I'll shut the bike down for a minute or two or three. When I push the starter button the engine will start. As soon as I let go of the starter button the engine quits. After doing this five to seven times the engine will stay running. Or if I hold the starter button for an extra second when the engine starts it stays running (not good for starter). My vin # is in the 1400's so I don't think this is a recall issue with the wiring harness. This does not happen all the time. When this happened (one of the times) I turned the ignition off waited approximately 3 seconds and turned it back on. When I pushed the starter button it fired right up. Over the weekend the same issue occurred. Turned the engine off, within two to three minutes turned on ignition (waited for everything to cycle), pushed the button - same issue. I waited a few seconds pushed button again, same issue. Turned off ignition waited a few more seconds turned ignition on and pushed the starter button. Engine had same issue. I then held the starter button down for that extra second and it fired right up. If Max is sitting for, I'll say more than 10 minutes after a ride it will start right away. Is this an issue with the engine getting flooded, vapor lock or what? Also is there an inline fuel filter that can be checked. Max has 230 miles to date, but did sit on the showroom floor from May 2009 to January 2011.
Thanks, Doug |

I have had the same problem when trying to start it for 2 yrs now. When it's hot, I have to just hold the starter button for that extra second after it starts, or it will stall. I think it's just normal and I haven't done anything but hold the button for that extra second!

This is the first I've heard of this issue, Except similar symptoms with the Harness Recall.
Both my 2009 and my 2010 start the same---2nd or third cycle --- all the time ---- hot or cold. Mark |

Mine used to take a while to start cold but never a hot start problem but the Flash cured even the slow cold start for me
still does not start like other bikes I have owned but much better now |

Your bike isn't broken in.. The rings aren't even seated yet (for proper compression).. Don't be too concerned until after you hit 1000 miles or so.. It needs to be run, that's all.. Ride it like you stole it when you get a chance and all will be fine.. Bet?

To answer your second Question, no there's no such Thing as an Inline Fuel Filter.
There's a Cushion-like Filter at the Botton of the Fuel Pump Pickup, but nothing else. But It's not "serviceable", Yammi hasn't even a Partsnumber for this Part. |

Thanks for the replies.
My wife's cousin owns a few dirt track stock cars, the first race of the season is this weekend. His driver is a dealer for VP racing fuels. My wife's cousin said he uses SEF 94 ($60.00 + for 5 gal) in his ATV's, cycles and other play toys. He believes in this fuel and thinks I should try it in the Max. I use VP fuel (C12) in my WR450 with no issues (smells good too). In fact the WR runs like a new machine when I use the C12. I do mix it half and half with reg. gas. Do you think running $60.00 worth of VP SEF 94 through the Max would help with the fuel issue I'm having? The nice thing about VP is that there is no Ethanol in it. I even thought about running one tank of mixed C12 and reg. gas through the Max prior to this issue. Doug |

Doug,
I think your going to find--The higher the octane, the harder it's going to be starting when cold ! Mark |

Or should I use some seafoam within the reg. gas. Max did sit on the show room floor for over a year. There was two miles on it when I bought it. I don't know if the two miles were put on when the dealership got it or not. They prepped it with me watching and only tested it by going through the gears in the parking lot. Doug |

You can mix gas all you want, but until the big V4 is broken in, you will experience some quirks. It's imperative that the motor be broken in and rings seated before it settles in to its duty cycle.. We're talking ceramic composite cylinder liners, moly rings, pent roof combustion chambers, an oxygen sensor, two catalyzers, and an EXUP power valve. That's not even mentioning the 3 chips that compensate for parameters such as crank position, temperature, & even barometric pressure every 1/1000th of a second! Your bike has 270 miles on it & none of the above has settled in to it's duty cycle! The engine is nowhere near where it needs to be for 100% proper operation.. RIDE IT! It will straighten out once it's broken in!
I see where you've already disconnected the ex-up valve.. Not too sure how wise that is until broken in either.. |
