Re: Clutch 1 year 2 days ago #21

Does anybody know why yamaha requires the close tolerances (45.5 to.46.1 mm) for total width of the clutch pack. I'm just guessing it has something to do with the slipper clutch function as I've never done a clutch where that was a concern before. I wonder how important it is or if you can just replace everything with the standard plates and go!

When I go thru the gears (street riding) I can feel 3rd gear gear start to let go a little bit lately (single spring stock clutch set-up 23000 miles). This winter I will replace the plates and leathers and was wondering the same thing...will the overall thickness automatically be within spec? At that point I plan on joining the 9 second club ;)

There are different size steels that you can buy to bring the thickness into specs. I think if you buy the plates and they are within specs you got lucky.

One thing I just noticed when looking at the parts list is that there is a bearing that has been replaced.

BEARING
93306-00315-00 (replaces 93306-00304-00)

I don't know if its a big deal but if the dealer is replacing your clutch maybe you could ask them about this.

Its hard to find neutral and creeps forward with the clutch pulled in.
It may be as simple as re-bleeding the clutch. Seeing as it happened while at the strip??

I had these same symptoms after the first drag-fest...

about 4 hours ttl of hot laps and my clutch was definitely toasted by the end

i had san jose yamaha replace eveything right after, but we didn't bleed the clutch right then,

i think we are evaporating a bit of clutch fluid @ the track & we may need to check the fill and

top it off when hot-lapping like this... :hmmm: (just my hypothesis)

and that's possibly why the clutch isn't fully disengaging and Neutral is elusive

we may need a bigger aftermarket clutch reservoir for the dragstrip...

I bought the whole set and a couple of the larger steels just in case. When the stock steels and frictions are together they hit the spec perfect. If your gonna try replacing bits and pieces i think your in for alot of checking and trying different sizes

Cool. So, no bits or pieces. A complete set of Factory steels and leathers "should" fit perfectly within spec. Anyone disagree?
Thanks SHADOW

That's what I did my first clutch change & that's also when I tried the double disc setup ;) Back then there was no fancy retainers tho..
