TOPIC: wobble

wobble 3 years, 3 months ago #1

Hi there,

I am new to the forum and to owning a V-Max.

I recently purchased a 2000 V-Max and have since learned it has a bit of a high speed wobble, particularily whne I take one hand off a handle bar to wave while doing ~ 80 kms in 5th gear.

I am wondering if this is something common with V-Max's as the bike was purchased form a reliable source, has never been laid down and has low kms.

Cheers,
Darren

Darren,

Welcome to the site. Unfortunately this is a somewhat common issue with the original VMax. The design dates back to 1984 (and earlier) and many VMaxes have developed the high speed wobble over time. There are several proposed fixes available for it but I will let the experts chime in.

Ride safe!

very common....

look up the furber fix...(google the instructions)

it involves adding a washer and restacking some of the components in the steering collom..

also a better fork brace, and frame stiffiners..

better tires aslo help..

I currently have a 2000 as well and have a steering stabilizer, fork brace, the furber fix, and avon venom X tires and still get the wobble every now and then.. shitty roads also contribute.. I've never had the problem on the drag strip, but normal back roads between 80 and 100 while pulling hard I hold on really tight as it's still a problem..

good luck, its a toughy, but worth the fun..

Yup. Had a 2000 as well and experienced the ol' wobble.

Furburger fix it and you'll be much more comfortable.

Check for good tires and tire pressure. Check steering bearings and lube or replace if necessary and re-torque castellated nuts and top triple nut.

You may also wanna check the loose nut behind the wheel....

All of the above factors can cause the dreaded "wobble". Make sure your tires are not worn, wearing funny, or even low air pressure. Make sure your steering head bearings are properly adjusted, lubricated properly and checked on a yearly basis.
I found this discussion that helped to explain the handling of my '92 Vmax. http://www.vmaxforum.net/showthread.php?t=5442

All of the above is true, but make sure you check axle bearings as well. My 07 had a wobble but only at 45 to 47 mph. I torqued the steering nut & it went away. I only used Dunlops.

hey bro,I also own a 2000 vmax and I noticed that it starts to wobble at about 100mph depending on the road condition but I have owened mine for a couple of years now and have other people tell me that it`s just the way they act. it has something to do with the drive shaft being part of the swing arm and thats why I`m afraid to race it long distances. Dave,,,,I live in ontario, california.

I've heard all those stories about high speed wobbles but in 50 years of riding the only time I have experienced it was when I was very cold. They'll all wobble when you are tense on the bars or if you have badly worn tires. My 88 MAX does not wobble even at an indicated 145.

My Son had a 92 MAX that had a wobble and we found someone had over tightened the steering head.

Sure looking forward to my new 09 and all the new technology that I know will be built into it.
