My buddy has a '03 with 3000 miles. Just recently it started to not hold a idle without the choke, and the rpm's would hang at about 4K when ridding....great for cruise control but nothing else.
I've semi cleaned out the carbs, and blew out the air jets, and added some seafoam. bike now idles great, but still hangs the rpm at 3K when riding , or just a slight twist of the trottle. Its mint and he rides it maybe twice a month (prefers bashing around on his 954)...but since we hooked up he wants to ride the Max more. Any ideas before he gives it out....vacuum leak somewhere? I just can't figure it out...had the carbs apart twice already and checked the hoses also. Thanks, Chris |

My bet is that is is still in the carbs. I had a similar problem not long ago on my 88 and went through the carbs (thoroughly I thought). Didn't fix it so I thought it was in the ignition.
Couldn't figure it out so I finally took it to Chris Wedman, Wedman Performance in OKC who is the expert around here on Vmax. It now runs perfectly and it was in the carbs. Chris says the new gas with ethanol is causing a lot of similar problems. |

I'm working on a set of newer carbs now and ethanol is crap! Make sure you use BG Supercharge or the like if you run ethanol.
When going through carbs, remove pilot fuel jets from the jet block to verify they are clear. That orifice is tiny! Mark #1098 |

Thanks guys...I'll try it again. It's just soo frustrating for him because I keep telling him that its the problem.
My first time I also had to clean mine out a couple times. And yes I will remove all jets possible this time. Chris |

Make sure the diaphgrams are in good shape, are all seated correctly, needle retainers are all correct and that the slide moves freely in their bores.

RpM hanging at a higher Level are either lean Setup, clogged Fuel Jets or Vacuum Leak somewhere.

Have you checked the obvious & lubed the throttle cable?
