Hello Everyone,
Well, I made a bone-headed move today. I did my 600 mile drive-shaft oil replacement per the owner's manual. About half way through the process, I went to tighten up the oil drain bolt and I over-tightened it and stripped out the threads! I used a torque wrench and set it to 23nm per the owners manual, but I definitely used too much strength and stripped the threads right out! The oil drain plug bolt will still tighten, but it only goes so far and doesn't stop to create a good seal. If I leave it that way, it will surely leak and create even more havoc! Anyway...I'm wondering what I can do now? Does anyone know of a way to get this part re-threaded? I'm thinking I'll probably have to replace the whole drive shaft cover that contains the thread for the oil drain plug (large pumpkin piece). If I have to do that, what does that involve? Will I have to remove the rear wheel? If I have to do that, then I have to find an alternative way to raise the rear of the bike as I won't be able to use the rear spools because the left spool ties in to the large pumpkin piece. I also removed my cat box so I'll be able to raise the bike with some jack stands or a regular car jack if need be. God, what a pain in the a$$ and what a dumba$$ I feel like! Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Man that sucks.....
Kinda funny thing while I was reading your thread, I noticed the banner under it for thread repair... www.timesert.com/ I have never heard of this.... it must be kinda like a Heli-coil. You'll have to check it out yourself...I didn't look into yet.. Just though I'd reply first!!! Always be careful using your torque wrench...some people always want to give it a little more and don't think about the extra leverage on it... Yuo could always bring it to the dealer to do the oil change and blame it on them!!!! Get it fixed soon..... Report back!!! Mike D |

Hows about some teflon tape? Do you think teflon tape would do the trick? The threads literally ripped right out. There is still a small trace of thread in there, but not enough to keep the bolt tight enough to create a good seal. As it stands, it definitely wouldn't withstand the test of time... It may be worth a try though! |

Here's a suggestion....
I'm familar with a product we have used in repair of castings and expensive vehicles we use and manufacture. I used this stuff myself for srtipped threads in vehicles and castings of gear cases. Look at the website and check out the Belzona Super Metal. I don't know if you have a dealer near you, however I CAN say you can easily repair this using the Belzona. WWW.BELZONA.COM |

GO with the time serts, I have use them a lot , they are better than helie coils. do you know what size you need, most napa stores carry them , just tell what size you want, and you get a kit to in stall it,drill and tap. I have use these on v w spark plugs and carb repair. just take the drain plug to the store so you will get the right size, I hope this helps. Ernie

Man I feel for you I stripped and cracked my sump just trying to get the bolt undone after it had been serviced by my dealer, the advice given so far seems to have you on the right track.
good luck Rick |
