TOPIC: What battery to use in old Vmax?
What battery to use in old Vmax? 1 year, 10 months ago #1
|
The battery in my 1988 Vmax needs to be replaced and I was just wondering what all the rest of you use in your bikes? I have a Yausa battery in there right now and that is all I have ever used. I guess I was wondering if anybody knew of a sealed battery for these bikes or a better replacement for the Yausa if there is one? And also if there is a more powerful one out there too.
Thanks. Krazykevman |

I use to recycle my old aircraft battery in the classic max..
www.google.com/products?q=Odyssey+pc680 might seem a little expensive, but they are worth it and fit fine. |

You can fit an 20 amps battery with light modifications of the battery rack. No easy to put in place, but that works!
To prevent battery defect and increase his life time, the best is to install a thermal protection against the heat from the rear exhaust gas pipes. The best I have seen for the 1200 Max is the panasonic LCX-1220p
you can even get the generic version from batterys plus and get over three years out of them and they go for like 55.00 or so I have replaced some that were 7 years and still going!! the last one I replaced was 5 years old and it went out slow, NO Mods needed to the battery Box!! unlike the Yuasa that can die and no return.. Try them you will like. |

On my 89, I had problems because of the rec/ reg, being the older style. I would get about 13.2-5 volts max, when running. I bought an after market reg off Ebay. Believe it came from Ca. That baby pumped out 14.5-8. Never had problems after putting in the new reg. I went through batteries like mad, before. Lead batteries need heated up to over 14v.

On vmaxforum there are a quite few guys who have had problems with the panasonic.
Odyssey PC680 is the best IMHO and probably one of the most expensive. This battery is used typically by the big bore guys. |

I had very good Results with the 18 Ah Version and after 7 Years, i replaced the Battery with a 22Ah Panasonic.
Biggest Problem with this Panasonic is the Battery Post are too close togehter. I had to fab some Copper Brackets to get the Posts out of the Way of the Ign-Coil Bracket. But, you could buy an Aftermarket in the same Size and Specs and have the Posts on the right Spot. I found them after i purchased the Panasonic, i would have gone with an Aftermarket. like these: www.bohannonbattery.com/html/deka/etx20l.html www.batteriesinaflash.com/sealed-lead-ac...versal-ub12220-40696 www.atbatt.com/product/22505.asp |

The Odyssey PC680 is the battery of choice for a Gen 1 Vmax here in the UK. If you can get them they are the mutts nuts.
