TOPIC: Hey FX about the polished air scoops

Hey FX about the polished air scoops 5 years 7 months ago #1

The former model’s faux air-intake scoops have been replaced with functional ones made from real aluminum, and Star reps tell us they are hand-polished in a process that takes 40 minutes each!

Are they polished mirror like, like an unprotected wheel, or clear coated?

Good question. Speaking of polished aluminum, I have too much aluminum to work on after a good long road trip. Also, water stains are a big problem. I spend hours with the White Diamond, 0000 wool n rags to get a serious shine. Is there anything out to periodically coat the cleaned aluminum, like a wax?

Yes I've been using this since i was a kid. SimiChrome polishs aluminum to semi-chrome B)

Yes, it's a wax, albeit not a lasting wax, but offers easy touch up. :cheer:

I'll give it a go. Just want to keep the simple staining to a minimum. Thanks.

They are more like polished/brushed and clearcoated. You might want to polish or chrome them if you want high gloss, should also look great in black chrome...

Check out Zoop Seal

I have a 94 Impala SS with more than enough polishd aluminum to go around, its a real pain in the ass to keep clean. I gave this stuff a shot and it actually works. Its not cheap, and is pretty laborious to apply, but they claim it actually stops oxidzation for up to 3 yrs by chemically bonding to the metal. It does take a slight amount of lustre away, but I feel its worth it considering I havent had to polish the wheels, or anything under the hood in over a year.

Silly question: Why would you not go chrome on it?

Polished aluminum has it's very own charm, different and some say more appealing than chrome (which eventually rusts). this is a great alternative to chroming with lasting effects. Most of the show bikes, Busa's and such are polished aluminum. Cheaper than chrome and you can do it yourself! :cheer: I have even used this stuff to get rid of minor scratches on visors.

You cant polish scratches out of chrome, it will never look as good as the day you got it back form the plater, its relatively expensive, its very, VERY heavy, and the finish is too flashy in my opinion, almost looks cheap.

Here is one of the wheels off my car professionally polished with zoop seal applied:

WHile I dont have any pics, they still look like this a year later.

If that was chrome plated, it would weigh a good 20 to 30 lbs more to a 20" wheel. Think of all the extra unsprung weight you just added, the car would stop like an oil tanker and handle very similar as well.

Here's how she sits, i love this car...:)
