TOPIC: OMD Obsessive motorcycle disorder

Re:OMD Obsessive motorcycle disorder 4 years 7 months ago #161

Did some surgery on the MT-01 exhaust. Cored out the stock canisters and removed the catalytic converters (for track use only ;))
it sounds real good now. Gained a lot of insight into modern Yamaha stock exhaust construction. I will post a picture of the cats . I'm pretty sure they are the same that will be found on the 09 Vmax.
Here is 1 of the 2 catalytic converters removed. 2 inchs in diameter they were tack welded near the inlet of each exhaust canister on the MT. I believe they are located (buried)in the central exhaust belly can on the 09 max. If you look close at the picture you can see thru the cat, the cooling fins on the RD 400 are visible; the cats are a restriction to flow but are admittedly well designed and flow quite well. I sat one on a hair dryer and was quite suprised at how well it flowed.

World's first Catalytic converter equipped EPA approved Hairdryer/flowbench. My wife thinks I'm crazy. I tried explaining to her that this type of experimentation is very important and helps feed my OMD.:S She just dosen't get it:lol:

The cats are made up of an outer 2”steel pipe 1 1/2” long . The core material is a continuous ribbon of u shaped channel that is rolled inside the outer pipe. I am going to try to remove this ribbon of material mechanically from the outer pipe to see if it will be possible to pull this out on the 09 max without having to do ”surgery” on it. The central exhaust can on the new VMax is going to be a tough nut to crack. I expect to just be leaving it alone or bypassing it and look towards the slip on mufflers for those extra Db’s.
