TOPIC: Valve adjustment

Valve adjustment 1 year 4 months ago #1

I just talked to a independant shop that just did the 26000 mile valve adjustment on a 09 Vmax. He stated that all the exhaust valves were tight on the bike and that this does need to be checked on schedual as required.

He also did some shims on the intake valves. When the bike was all back together it had loss of power.
Yamaha couldn't seem to help him with the problem. After having the engine in and out a couple of times he finally figured out that the problem was an error in the Yamaha service manual. Its a procedure that ends up putting the intake cam timing out of wack.

It probably won't happen unless the intake cams are removed to adjust intake valve shims. Just something to be aware of for those of you who are thinking of taking on this job and following the service manual procedure.

After having the engine in and out a couple of times
:scary: Yikes!!

Thanks for that report.....that could save someone a lot of time and/or money!!

It would be great if we could get some more detail on what the error in the manual is.

Re: Valve adjustment 1 year 4 months ago #5

He stated that it is a 10 to 12 hour job. He said he checked with a lot of Yamaha shops looking for one that had adjusted intake valves and might have answers to his problem. He said the further east he went the more expensive the job was. He said Yamaha was showing it as a six hour job but he thinks that is probably just to check the clearance. If out of spec. and shims need to be replaced the price probably goes up. Ironiclly while he was searching for answers he contacted UFO and said they put him on the right track. I think UFO has been doing some cam degree work on the max. I thought he told me that UFO told him that they had found a stock bike with the cam timimg off wich results in 10-15hp loss.

This mechanic made a lot of corections in the service manual for the next valve service. It was the owners service manual so he couldn't show me the changes. He did say that you need to start timing from #1 cylinder instaed of #2 cylinder as shown in service manual.

Definitely more expensive as you go east....dealers around have around a $100 per hr labor rate last time I checked. So at least $1000 here for that job.

Curious as to why the engine has to be "pulled" when the heads can be completely removed by un mounting the front and side motor mounts ?

I am not far off that milestone I do know a shim kit can be purchased for about 125.00 and it's a big tray box assortment

Sure would be nice to reassemble with some upgraded cams.
