I’ve got 680 miles on my bike and I am going to do my own 1st service. I just don’t trust my local dealer to do as good of a job as I can do and the money saved can go towards the Scorpio 600 alarm I’ve purchased.
The owner’s manual calls for Yamaha DRIVE SHAFT GEAR OIL (9079E-SH001-00). Only the new FJR and the VMAX require this stuff. I would use a Mobil 1 brand gear oil but I can’t find the specs for the Yamaha gear oil so I could match it. This stuff is expensive ($28.56 MSRP for a pint), but I don’t want to risk a $20,000 motorcycle on saving $20. I called my local dealer to see if they have it in stock and was told they don’t but the other stuff they have in stock will work. I’m sure that if I’d let them do the service that they would have used the cheaper wrong stuff, charged me for the good stuff, and possible done damage to my bike and voided my warranty. Just hope y’all have better dealer that I do. Good idea to double check that they are using the correct stuff. |

Hey BooCoo, you probably should let a Yamaha dealer do the first service so you can document it for warranty purposes. By doing that, even if they use the wrong stuff Yama will still cover it.

Amen Red, the first service is most important to show adherence to scheduled maintenance.
They use hypoid cut gears, and anything else WILL ruin the differential. |

Red dirt is right. If the dealer doesn't do the service and something goes wrong with your bike then they have a way out. I understand completely about bad help at the dealer my front brake calipers where not tighted up, didn't find out till i wiped the wheels down after I'd rode over 100 mph on my last outing, they won't be doing my service but will find another dealer so my warranty still good.

It would really be nice if you could at least find this stuff. My dealer has ordered from two other dealers before finally finding ONE bottle at another dealer, who very graciously shipped us the item for a paltry $32.00!
FYI, my dealer tells me he has to order his Yamaha oil at specific times during the year in order to get it. His order will go in January and there's a case coming. If ya can find it, better stock up! |

Yea, I wish I could trust my local dealer to do at least the 1st service but, I don't. It will not affect the warranty in any way for anyone to do it. Read page 10-4 of your owners manual. There is nothing special about the 1st service. When it come time for the valve adjustment I'll take it to the dealer but I will look long and hard for and honest one.
I'd rather do the 1st myself than let some half-ass dealer touch my new VMAX. But each to their own, right? I waited too long to get my dream bike than to count on Yamaha to correct the warranty issue that I can simple avoid by doing it myself. I will follow every step in the owners manual and document it all. It will give me some time to get intimate with my bike and have the piece of mind than it is done right by somebody that loves her. Yes, it is a her! Mistress Maxine and she is one tough bitch! For those that are looking for the final drive gear oil. I found a site that has the stuff for a fair price. www.fjrgoodies.com/ The FJR requires the same gear oil as the VMAX and I'm sure they wont mind selling products to their VMAX brothers. |

This is what I was going to use if I could get the spec from the Yamaha stuff but that is a big secret. It wouldn't be so bad if one dealer within a 100 mile radius of me a one pint in stock. Makes me wonder what they are using to service all the FJR's and VMAX's?!?
www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Ot...r_Lube_75W-90LS.aspx I did my own oil change tonight and I used Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40. This stuff is great and meets or exceeds all of the Yamalube specs for motor oil. www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Motorcycle_Oils.aspx |
