Buy a quart of Mobil 1 for $14 . You`ll have enough to change oil 4 times . I`ve also used Lube -ME - DEEP - LOL with no problems. Just make sure your wheel spins when you finish with the axle . It don`t need to be Tq to 100 ftlbs. The axle will never come out when the pinch bolts are tight. Chuck Torque the rear axle to 80 ft.-lbs.!!!! This is part of the rear drive case stress. With too little torque the case will be overstressed. |

If you torque the rear axle to 80lb . You`ll need a rear within 100 miles .
I never put a torque wrench on my axle . I have the FEEL LOL ( This is part of the rear drive case stress. With too little torque the case will be overstressed ) Maybe I don`t understand. Do you believe that . When you tighten up the axle nut . It pull the axle to the wheel There`s a shoulder on the brake side That pulls against the bearings bringing the wheel into the splines of the pumkin ...That put stress on the drive . I`m just going on what I know . Or how I do it . Chuck |

Actually, I've had the pleasure of doing this more on an 09 Vmax than anyone else here. Changing that rear tire is no picnic, but each & every time it gets torqued. Actually Yamaha has the axle marked on mine. That mark lines up with the center crack between the pinch bolts. That's when I know I have it tight

It's about 80lbs of torque. I know I really have to wreak on it to line the mark back up.

Chuck Didn't really have to deal with the Torque on anything today...just changed my engine and pumpkin oil for the first time with 625 miles on the 2009...right after I did the same on the 2006... Had to go get some extra socket sizes off the tool holder on the wall peg board...I hated the 25 foot walk...too much exercise for one day... Anyway, the engine oil was extremely dirty and black...and my pumpkin only spit out 300cc, so giving that 10cc was probably still on the gears, it was 10-20cc low...not bad... One thing I hate is the oil filter...you can't use a standard 3/8" socket handle or ratchet wrench on a FRAM PH6017A filter with a filter spin-off tool because the FRAM is about 1/2 longer then the manufacturer DENSO filter and the corner of the radiator is in the way...No problem, I got the job done with my hands...that's all it needs anyway... Other than the fact that I had a brain fart and only bought a 4.73 Quart bottle of oil and had to go get some more...two this time...it was a totally boring hour of smoking six cigarettes and drinking a six pack of Bud American Ale...I know...I know...I'm a BASS and Guiness guy normally...but I was trying to help the US economy...hey...they were Marlboro Flip-Top Box Cigs (made with pride in VA)...give me a break... |
