If you leave your bike running stationary for 20 minutes the engine will shut down as a fail-safe measure. Fault code No. 70 - Page 8-65 in Service Manual.
Found this out by starting my bike to help the battery to charge up after sitting about 6 weeks after an oil change in January. I was keeping the engine speed between 1000-2200 RPM while monitoring the engine temperature (which was at 3/4 on gage). Was planning on running it for about 30 minutes to burn off any condensation in the crankcase and charge the battery at the same time. Engine shut off after a while and panel showed "70" where the total miles normally would show. I checked the service manual and that's where I found out why it shut down. Anybody know why they don't want it to idle past 20 minutes? Since the temp was 37F outside and salt and gravel covered roads, I wasn't riding it. On a side note the Yamalube 4 20w-50 chart shows temp range down to 50F on the low side. Was concerned about running the bike in the 30-40F range. Thoughts? Ken |

Good to know !!!!
I'll remember to blip the throttle often....Now I have a reason!! It must only time out at idle for that time....Probably a DOT /EPA Standard?? No Mike D Gonna go fire mine up now!! 46 deg. out..... Better keep it in the shed... Too much salt on the road!! |

No Mike D Mike, I don't think blimping the throttle will fool it because I was varying the engine speed between idle and 2200 the entire time until it shut down. Ken |

Maybe I don't run it that long??? Gonna have to time it!! Maybe a bike is not made to idle for too long?? Thanks for a reminder to go play!!! MIke D 890209 wrote: skullmax wrote: Good to know !!!! Could be the Max is trying to save us money. If no activity, it shuts itself down to save Gas, which is a luxury for the MAX.
