TOPIC: Oil change after winter

Oil change after winter 1 year, 10 months ago #1

My '07 Vmax has been sitting all winter. I am going to give it an oil change. Should I warm up the engine first and then give the oil change or just do the oil change without even starting the bike. To me it makes most logical sense to not even start the bike as all the oil has settled to the bottom over winter and I would get the most old oil out this way. However I have read I should start the bike first and warm it up before oil change. Is there a reason for this? What do you guys do.
Thanks,

Warm oil runs out better and faster, but you are probably ok not starting it too, it will just take longer to drain. Personally I change to 10w40 in the fall, and then in the early summer when it gets warm, like May-June, go to 20w-50. I only ride about 3000 per year. We all do it different, though. And probably it makes no difference in the long run, just personal preferences...

if ur worried about oil changes that much u might as well just change it at the very end of the season. its better to store ur bike with fresh oil than old oil. i dont know if there is a big difference or if it really matters in the long run. but if ur concerned about it do it before the snow comes next time. thats my advice

You could drain the Oil today and come back tomorrow to finish the Job or warm the Bike real good and get'r done...
