TOPIC: Oil Leak Final Drive...
Oil Leak Final Drive... 1 year, 6 months ago #1

I have 380 miles & before I went to fill up gas I cleaned the wheels like I do every 2 rides with Glass+ & paper towels & I see there's oil on the rear wheel.I get it all cleaned off & realize that's too much oil to have been picked up off the street so I look under the final drive & it's leaking where it's bolted to the swing arm.Great, I now have to check & possibly fill it before I even change it @ 600 miles.I wiped it off before I left & no more leaked out in that short trip.I also have a real small coolant leak that I can't find the source of.Anyone else have this problem?

The differential was probably overfilled by your dealer during prep. The coolant leak may also clear up on it's own. Both these problems have appeared and been discussed. Keep an eye on the coolant leak. It should stop within the 1st 500 miles.

With the bike upright. undo the small drain bolt on the far right side.Once the oil stops coming out it is perfect..I learned this the hard way

The coolant leak sounds like a common problem that I and others have had. If the location is on the right side of the engine dripping on to the header, it is the same problem. It is leaking out of a hole in the case. The hole comes out of the water pump. The fix is to have the dealer replace a seal in the water pump.

I drained the excess like Qtip said & just a little more came out.It was greenish colored so I wonder if the stealership put the wrong oil in?That's 2 strikes for those morons, not tightening the motor oil fill cap & putting too much oil in the final drive.
Qtip, did the overfill cause your part failure & what parts failed? Yes it's leaking on the right side header. |

I changed the final drive oil myself and put too much oil in and It kept leaking and I kept on tightening the very top small bolt on top of the main bolt and ended up striping it out.

I renewed the motor (2nd time) & final drive oil @ 599 miles.
Just for anyone else that changes the final drive oil this is what it takes versus what the service manual says. Leave the oil check bolt out when you fill it up & you'll see that when you get 8 ounces in it will start coming out the hole. That is when it's full as Qtip stated. Now just to see what happens when you pour in .32 US quarts (10.5 ounces) as the service manual states I added 2.5 more ounces. The next day I thought I had a Harley parked where the Max is because those 2.5 extra ounces were on the floor under the hole in the swing arm.So the stealership probably did put in the correct amount according to the service manual. I used SuperTech 75W90 semi synthetic from WallyWorld for about $5 a quart.I would have got the full synthetic but it was 75W140.I'll change it 2 more times to use the quart & then put in 80W90 Amsoil full synthetic I have left over from the Warrior. |
