I'll be the one to differ. I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendations. I've been riding for 34 years and was raised by a mechanic that built race cars, who taught me an easy break-in will lead to longer life and more hp. Seems to work so far.

I'd like to add to that. Have a friend of mine who is a mechanic and who has done a lot of work on race engines. He tells me that race engines are broke in at idle, even factory race engines...
I have no technical know how myself, but like I said,this is what I've been told by some one who does.

I would say both camps, "easy" and "hard" break-in have valid points. The engine needs to have it's cylinders pressurized to seat the rings properly. This is important for the engine to make max power and have minimum oil consumption. This is done by getting on the throttle hard, but it's important not to lug the engine or over rev it. A real good example would be WOT up a long incline at say 4k rpm- 8k rpm.....this would have the desired effect. You want to do this whenever you have the chance when on the bike during the break in.
The other side of this is that all of the other parts in the engine and drive train need a while to wear in. It is not a good idea to thrash the gearbox, valve train, clutch, and the rest of drive train when the bike is brand new. They will do better with a more gradual, less stressful break in.

This is my opinion of course, but I did a lot of research while waiting for delivery of my 09'.

Yes they do but, dedicated race engines aren't built to such tight tolerances as non-race engines as, break-in needs to occur quickly (race day may be same day, etc) and they are rebuilt frequently anyway, unlike most mass produced street vehicles.
