TOPIC: Bike not running right need carb cleaning help

Re: Bike not running right need carb cleaning help 2 years 4 weeks ago #11

Sounds to me like the engine may not be firing on all cylinders. After idling for a short time carefully check the header pipes to see which ones are hot.

If you find which if any cylinders not firing it will be much easier to diagnose the problem.

Read the thread..not sure if thats it.

Here is what I did this weekend.

1) Shotgun cleaning procedure found here vmax.lvlhead.com/tips/shotgun.htm
****I noticed that when I drained the carb bowls of fuel, the left side had gas come out. The right side front had ZERO gas come out. The right side back had very minimal gas out. Cleaning procedure as described did not change perfformance of bike. I dont think i fixed anything other than clear up any potential or very minimal crap in that part of carbs.

2) Crimp solder fix found here vmaxoutlaw.com/tech/crimp.htm
***performed fix as described and did a good solder on it.

3) I uploaded a video on Youtube demonstrating how the Maxx will run a healthy idle (choke is engaged...bike wont last long with No Choke).
In this video, choke is engaged, and throttle is engaged (bike bogs down,. almost dies every time...)

Here is video

Do you guys have any serious suggestions? Pulse pick up coil?> I am not familiar with that....wouild need more info on symptoms if that is bad. Is needle and floats (roommate telling me) gummed up and stuck?
*******do i need to remove carbs completely, disassemble, clean, reassemble, reinstall?

Additional issue...battery will not hold charge.. had trickle charger on all night. No improvement. would expect juicier battery but not the case. you can hear how weak it is in video as well. have had bike run for a while.. has great gas in it...airplane fuel so that is not the case. tank looks alright. I also replaced fuel filter so that is not the issue. helped a little bit but issue in video remains! Help please all you VMAX gurus out there...

thanks

Most definitely a lack of fuel. Pull the carbs, disassemble them, and soak everything metal in a carburetor cleaner gallon can (bought at any parts store). Then set the float levels correctly. That should put you in the ballpark. Don't forget to synch the carbs once they are reinstalled.

Yeah it's not the pulse pickup coils, but def has a dead cylinder at idle.. Does sound like gum'd up carbs..

Thanks, I'll plan on starting that this weekend. A few questions first....

I found the service manual available at one of the links i provided above...so I plan on simply following that to pull/disassemble/reassemble carbs.

1) How do I set float levels?

2) How do I sync carbs?

3) Should I order some parts to replace while I have carb disassembled?

4) special tools necessary?

*****note...when I did Shotgun cleaning procedure, I had to remove mixture screws. On at least one carb, I was not able to get the O-ring on the mixture screw out of the carb. I tried forcing with air again and again and could not get it out. mixture screw, spring, washer, gasket. should i look at replacing some of these parts? depends on condition? what is bad enough to replace? aarggh!

If you've got the genuine shop manual it's all in there. How to sync and how to set fuel level. Personally I would get the rebuild kit that no_max provided and do it right. You will need a manometer to sync. If you're not getting fuel out of the bowl drain then your float needle has to be stuck.

As stated in a previous post, you will need a carb synchronizer tool. There are cheap homemade versions and there are expensive versions. You get what you pay for. Or you could have a shop synch the carbs for around $50-100.00. But this is a must do once you get the carbs re-mounted.
