Jay Gleason does it again! As reported in great details on our forums, Jay Gleason managed to put the hammer down yet again. Last week he rode a mild custom 2009 Vmax to a breathtaking 9.51 @ 143 mph in the quarter mile.
With the help of Bob Ward (aka Bad_Bob) and Tim Nash (aka VMaxGuru) the racing community witnessed an historic event and what is most likely the start of an even wilder journey.
Within only a few months the new VMax has already attained cult status amongst many racing and muscle bike fans around the world. Now that the legend - Jay Gleason - has shown us once again what racing is all about, we are sure to see a lot more attention from tuners and enthusiasts alike for the all new Next Generation VMax.
Without further due, here is a first hand summary of the events that unfolded by Bob Ward:
Jay Gleason getting to work
The all new 2009 Star Vmax is another success story from Yamaha. We just didn't know how fast the bike really is until a couple of our members here put togther a demonstration of how fast, out in sunny Florida. Tim Nash & Bob Ward, better known here on our forums, as Hilights360 and Bad_Max, cooked up a quarter mile race track event, that was nothing short of a stunning success.
The Historic Timeslip
Tim Nash from VmaxGuru.com had been focusing a lot of his time, on some improvements that could be done to the 2009 Vmax, and Jon Cornell from UFO Performance sent Tim some aftermarket parts to try out. Bob had been doing some experimenting of his own with his Vmax and the 2 got together at Tim's place for some dyno tests of their new bikes. Tim's a firm believer in keeping a good tune on his Vmax and owns his own dyno. Bob is an avid race fan & stressed the importance of real track time racing to Tim. Well the rest is history as the 2 planned and carried out a unique event in Bradenton Florida that showcased the all new 2009 Star Vmax from Yamaha.
Heating up the Drag Slick
Both these guys are pretty big at well over 6' tall and 250+ lbs, so they set out to find a couple of fast light weight riders. Lee Pritcher, better known as SmokinZx14 from Bikeland is a local ZX14 racer & a friend of Bob's so that was an easy choice, but Tim being an avid Vmax Guru wanted to see if he could find and convince Jay Gleason to pilot his 2009 Vmax thru the 1/4. Some of you will remember PeeWee Gleasons press launch of the new Vmax motorcycle that was introduced in 1985 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. His subsequent 1/4 mile times back then set a world record for a stock Motorcycle and the Vmax made history with a 10.33 quarter mile time back in 1985. Fast forward a quarter of a century, Jay Gleason now residing in Florida is still around & STILL loves going fast. Tim tracked him down, and Jay was willing to do the run if a slick would be mounted on the bike. A slick was indeed found & mounted. The rest is history as these 2 Vmax'rs put together quite an event. Pictures of the event can be found HERE and a few home spun videos as well.
Ready... Set...
GO GO GO!!!
1.61 in the 60s
Jay Gleason is BACK and proves he still has the skill it takes to ring the best time out of a motorcycle. He is aurgueably the lightest rider to ever lay down the numbers for Yamaha, and this particular evening was no different. The pair of 2009 Vmax's were lightly prepped with Tim's having the advantage of a good dyno tune & some extra aftermarket parts from UFO. The following times turned exceeded everyones expectations with Lee (SmokinZx14) turning a 9.87 on Bob (Bad_Max)'s Vmax at 136mph on a street tire. He also rode Tim's Vmax to a 9.74 matching a run By Jay Gleasons time on Bob's bike of 9.74. Not bad for a basically stock everyday rider.
Both Stars
No Drag Slick
Another 9.74
Tim's bike was the Cinderella of the ball tho, laying down consistent 9.5's all night long with Gleason showcasing his talent & making every run look easy. I don't know about you, but these are impressive numbers for such a big, comfortable, cruiser style motorcycle. No doubt Yamaha has another winner with their new improved Vmax. The runs from this night will be talked about for quite awhile, no doubt building some fires under these aftermarket company's to produce performance parts for Yamahas newest Star. The 2009 Star Vmax is a star performer for sure.
Special Thanks go to Bob Ward and Tim Nash for making this event happen and to Jay Gleason for showing the world once again who's the fastest VMax rider in the world!

Loaded & transported it straight on using ancra folding ramp-worked great! Back tire was right in the middle of the tailgate. Would not hesitate to put in the back in the future-sorry no pic of it in the truck.
Got about 40 miles in today on the VMax. It was a great ride. Except for a quick ride last Wednesday I haven't ridden since November. I hope winter is over cause I'm ready to ride full time.

Thanks for the link. Like BlackMax said that is very similar to the stand that I tried to use. The one that I borrowed looks like it could lift a tank - very solidly built, but the pin that snapped looks like a cast piece that seems like it is on the weak side. I didn't use a rear stand but I don't think that would help, it would only transfer more weight to the front. The pin was in nice and square I checked it as I started to lift.

How did the new tires feel? I spent 2 hours getting the rear shock setting right (I Hope ) on the Busa Does not squat as much on drag race type take off's so hopefully no more ripped off plates and holes in the undertail
I think there should be a FXTuner Production VMax Blacked out with C/F parts and race ready parts installed already.. Low and mean and running in the 9's out of the box
Make it happen Oliver!! Your on the payroll @ Star aren't ya?
